Easy Paper Plate Sun Catchers

By Lindsay Keller, Publisher of Macaroni Kid Skokie, Niles, Park Ridge, and Far Northwest Chicago April 3, 2020

These days I am constantly looking for something new to do with my daughter. And right now, it has to be something I can do with supplies I can find around the house. I tried looking on Pintrest for easy sun catcher crafts and came up with some great ideas. But I either didn't have everything needed to make them or they would end up being more work on my part and less to actually keep my four year old entertained.

So I decided to get creative and this is what I came up with.

Materials:

  • 2 paper plates per sun catcher
  • parchment paper (coffee filters or tissues paper will also work, but the thinner the paper, the more easily it could tare)
  • scissors
  • colored permanent markers
  • paint & a paintbrush
  • glue
  • string (ribbon or yarn will work just fine)
  • tape (optional)
  • hole punch (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Cut a shape (the same shape) out of the middle of both paper plates. This will make the frame for your sun catcher. We did one heart shaped and one circle.
  2. Paint the top of one plate and the bottom of the other. When you assemble your sun catcher, the plates will fit together with the top of one showing and the bottom of the other one showing.
  3. While the paint is drying, cut pieces of parchment paper large enough to cover the shape that you cut out of the middle of your paper plates.
  4. Use the colored permanent markers and color on the parchment paper to make a design or picture for your sun catcher.
  5. Assemble your sun catcher! The non-painted side of the paper plates will be glued together with the parchment paper between them. I taped the parchment paper to one of the paper plates first to hold it in place, before gluing the two plates together.
  6. Punch or cut a hole in the top of the plates. Thread string, ribbon or yarn through the hole and tie in a loop for hanging. Or just leave them as is and set them in the window.
