Spring Sports Physicals

March 22, 2019

The first day of Spring has finally arrived! With Spring comes the new sports season and outdoor fun! Whether your child needs a sports physical for extracurricular activities, sports leagues, or school sports, it is important for your child’s health and safety to start the season off right by receiving an exam.

Why Your Child Needs a Physical

If your child is participating in a spring sport, it is likely they will need a sports physical as clearance to play during the season. Sports physicals are a safe way to assess if your child is healthy enough to participate.

What to Expect

Physical examinations tend to vary by provider, but the goal is to identify and eliminate any risk or injury for the athlete.

Your child can expect to receive:

  • Vision Screen
  • Collect Vitals
  • Listen to Heart and Lung Sounds
  • Assess Range of Motion Issues

“During our exams we fill out a sports physical forms- either given by the school or a coach. We then examine the child. We ask the child to perform a series of physical moves like jump, bend, move.” Said Betty Pratt, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner.

What Providers Want You to Know Before Your Physicals

Not all children can be cleared for sports. If a child has a physical or medical problem, that prevents them from participating in sports. A provider must refer you to a specialist before the form can be completed.

How to Prevent Sports Related Injuries

To reduce any risk of injuries always remember to stretch before and after physical activities. Be sure to take breaks whenever needed. Wear suitable gear for your sport (cover eyes, hands, legs when appropriate, etc.). Always remember to stay hydrated when active so your little one does not get dehydrated. Some symptoms of dehydration are dry feeling--no spit--in the mouth.

Run to our board-certified physicians/pediatric trained nurse practitioners to do the job. We offer sports physicals seven days a week, no appointments necessary. Visit our website (www.urgentcarechildren.com) for more information!
