This week we made another trip to Chicago Park District's Olympia Park. This is a great neighborhood park. We were debating about which of three parks in the area we should visit this week, but it came down to two things: restrooms and the water feature.
Let's start with talking about the playground area. Every park is a little different in what they offer. At Olympia Park, what you would think of as the "main" play structure (pictured above) is small--meaning good for smaller kids and small in size. Yes, my two year old daughter will go on it, but briefly. This trip, she was more interested in the climbing features. The other playground elements are more spread out and focused on balance, climbing and strength. There are monkey bars connecting small islands, a spider web climbing structure and even a hang glider slide (yes, I had to look this one up). On either side of the playground area there is a row of swings--one row of adult swings and the other of baby swings.
In the summer, the great part about this park is that it has a water feature. It is a large pipe structure with water coming out in a few different places. No, it doesn't have all the flare of a splash pad, but on a hot summer day, it does the job of cooling you off. There is covered seating on either side of the water feature for those who would prefer to stay dry and in the shade. On the other side of the seating area, there is also a giant sand box for kids to play in. Both the sand box and the water feature were also favorites of my daughter.
In addition, Olympia park has baseball fields, a combo football and soccer field, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Inside the fieldhouse, there is a gymnasium and club rooms, and the park offers classes for 18 months through seniors. Olympia Park is a great place to take a break and spend a little time having fun with the kids and family.
Park Details:
- Olympia Park is located at 6566 N Avondale Ave, Chicago, IL 60631.
